Equestrian Photographer Boyd Gilmour

Through my love of horses I have naturally been interested in photographing them and there are lots of opportunities here in Northamptonshire.

I have been involved in projects such as creating an album of images for a young jockey (Henry) of his first ride at a point to point. From schooling his horse on the all weather gallops in the snow, to his first practice over fences at speed and then to the day of his first ride. Walking the course, getting changed into his silks, in the parade ring, going down to the start and finally the off and that first fence flat out with others along side – what a thrill and then to have beautiful album bound in leather to show your grand children – what a special possession.

I am frequently out photographing my local Pytchley Hunt and have covered pony club events. Everybody wants of good photograph of their favorite pony or horse jumping a big hedge so I make sure I am in the right spot to oblige.

I am not the greatest horseman in the world but it does help being able to ride a bit when photographing a rider approaching a fence, when to hit the trigger to capture the horse and rider in flight is developed with lots of practice and intuition.

There is also a demand for portraits of horse owners with their horse such is the special relationship and trust that horse and rider have for each other.
