Portraiture is a wide and diverse subject.
Yes, it is a photograph of an individual but the format can vary hugely. It might be an environmental portrait or lifestyle shot. It could have editorial bias that captures an insight into a person to support an article. Or, as seen in many social portraits, it may show the fun, warm disposition of the subject.
The key to a successful portrait is understanding what makes a person tick and ensuring they are at ease.
